Macomb Community College to host fun and educational summer programs for a variety of ages

This summer, Macomb Community College will host a variety of programs for area youth grades kindergarten through 12 to inspire and engage them in learning and career exploration activities. These programs, ranging from theater production to a look inside the medical field, are designed for participants to build new skills and sample fields they have never considered before.

Macomb’s summer programs include the Career Academies, focusing on career discovery and exploration; College for Kids, building skills through STEM-based courses; and the Performing Arts Workshops, concentrating on the arts, theater production and culminating in live performances.

Career Academies

Focusing on a variety of careers, the Career Academies include:

  • Camp Scrubs: Students explore health care-related careers including nursing; respiratory, physical and occupational therapy; medical assisting; and surgical technology (grades 6 – 10)
  • CSI at the PSI: Students learn how experts solve crimes (grades 9 – 11)
  • Legal Clinic: Students prepare and assist in the presentation of a mock trial (grades 6 -10)
  • Makerspace Career Academy: Students learn 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, and computer-aided design (grades 6 – 10)

All career academies are $99 per student and are held on Macomb’s Center Campus in Clinton Township, June 16 – 18, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Legal Clinic will be held July 28 –31, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

College for Kids

College for Kids provides STEM-based, skill-building courses that introduce students to the developing technological landscape. There are 13 sessions available, including:

  • Beats and Jams: Students learn to produce digital music and sounds. (two sessions, 9 a.m. – noon for ages 8 – 11 and 1 – 4 p.m. for ages 12 – 14)
  • Make Your First 3D Video Game: Students learn the physics behind 3D games and explore beginner event scripting and storytelling (two sessions, ages 8 – 10, 9 a.m. – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. for ages 11 – 14)
  • Minecraft Modders: Students learn the foundations of modding and programming (two sessions, 9 a.m. – noon for ages 8 – 11 and 1 – 4 p.m. for ages 11 – 14)
  • Python Programmers: Students learn one of the fastest-growing programming languages (two sessions 9 a.m. – noon for ages 8 – 11 and 1 – 4 p.m. for ages 11 – 14)
  • Esports Gamers and Streamers: Students develop game-play skills, compete in tournaments, learn how to produce commentary and use professional streaming software (two sessions, ages 8 – 10, 9 a.m. – noon and ages 11 – 14, 1 – 4 p.m.)
  • Eureka STEM Makers Camp: Students overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines and tips from famous inventors (ages 5 – 12, 9 a.m. – noon)
  • Mad Scientist Secret Agent Lab: Students will decode messages, use metal detectors and night vision (ages 5- 12, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • Roblox Coders and Entrepreneurs: Students learn to code in Lua language while playing and designing words in ROBLOX (two sessions, 9 a.m. – noon for ages 8 – 11 and 1 – 4 p.m. for ages 11 – 14)

All College for Kids sessions are held on Macomb’s Center Campus. Dates vary for scheduled sessions with costs for sessions ranging from $259 to $289. For more information and to sign up, go to wce.macomb.edu, then under Personal enrichment choose Youth Programs and College for Kids.

Performing Arts Workshops

The Performing Arts Workshops introduce students to all aspects of putting on a quality performance from singing and dancing to the behind-the-scenes technical aspects. The workshops include:

  • Drama Workshop: Teaches students skills such as cooperation, concentration, movement and story development (two sessions, grades 2 – 3, 9 a.m. – noon and grades 4 – 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
  • Musical Theater Workshop: Introduces the concept of summer stock theater with a performance of “Beetlejuice Jr.” July 18 and 19 for grades 7 -12 and “Disney’s Frozen Kids” with a performance Aug. 8 for grades 4 - 8
  • Show Choir Workshop: Combines vocal technique, song interpretation and dance (two sessions, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for grades 4 – 6 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for grades 7 – 12)
  • Youth Choir Workshop: Builds confidence through an introduction to music theory and vocal technique (two sessions, grades 2 – 4, 9 – 11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. for grades 5 and 6)
  • Tech Theater Workshop: Concentrates on the technical aspects of a performance including scenic elements, light and sound. The workshop runs July 7 – 18 then the students crew the workshop performance July 18 and 19 (grades 7 and up, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

The Drama Workshop will be held in the Lorenzo Cultural Center. All other Performing Arts Workshops will be held in the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. Dates vary for scheduled sessions.
