Gifts you don’t have to pay back!
FAFSA First!
There are many grants available to help you pay for your college education. They don’t have to be repaid as long as you maintain the required credit load and successfully complete your courses.
First step: Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and be sure to include Macomb’s Federal School Code: 008906 where prompted.
A new FAFSA must be submitted each academic year you attend college to receive financial aid.
Additional Aid
Federal Pell Grant
If your family income qualifies you for a Federal Pell Grant (what most think of in terms of federal aid), your grant will be based on your enrollment status (full or part time) and the cost to attend Macomb.
You can receive the Pell Grant for the equivalent of two full-time semesters each academic year, but it cannot be applied to two colleges or universities during the same semester.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
Federal SEOGs are awarded to Federal Pell Grant recipients with the greatest financial need.
All federal aid listed above is based on the funds appropriated by the U.S. Congress and is subject to change without notice.
Michigan Achievement Scholarship
If you are a 2023 High School graduate in the state of Michigan, completed your FAFSA with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $25,000 or less, registered for at least 12 credit hours per semester and enrolled at Macomb within 15 months after high school graduation, you will qualify for up to $2,750 per year for up to three years.
Tuition Incentive Program
If you are receiving Medicaid benefits, Michigan’s Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) may pay for your tuition (in-district tuition, registration and student service fees (no course fees) for up to 12 credit hours per semester, or a total of 24 credit hours per academic year).
Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver Program (MITW)
If you’re one quarter Native American and are a member of a federally recognized tribe, your tuition (not fees) at Macomb may be waived.
All state aid listed above is based on the funds appropriated by the Michigan State Legislature and is subject to change without notice.
Macomb sets aside funds each year to help our students stay in college. To qualify, you must meet the following criteria:
- Financial need
- Macomb County resident
- Enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours or more)
Borrowed money that you’ll have to repay
Let the buyer beware!
Not all loans are created equal. There are low- and deferred-interest loans, and those that charge the going interest rate, which begins to accrue as soon as the funds are received.
Federal Direct Stafford Loans
- A subsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan is a fixed-rate, low-interest loan based on financial need. You won’t be charged interest on the loan while you’re enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours or more).
- An unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan is not based on financial need. You’ll be charged interest from the time you receive the loan until it’s paid back in full.
Personal Loans
If you don’t qualify for a Federal Direct Stafford Loan, there are educational loans available from banks and credit unions. Our Financial Aid Office certifies the amount you can borrow, based on your cost of attendance and any estimated financial assistance you may receive.
It’s important that you read and understand the terms and conditions of all loans before you sign. And don’t be fooled by unsolicited loan offers. No matter how good they seem, the fine print is not likely in your best interest.
