Macomb Community College holds line on 2025-2026 tuition, maintaining previous year’s rates
Adjusts two fees that have been the same for more than a decade
At its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday evening, March 19, the Macomb Community College Board of Trustees authorized maintaining the previous year’s tuition rates for the upcoming academic year, Fall 2025 through Spring/Summer 2026. They also approved adjusting the college’s student service and IT/facility fees, both of which have been the same for more than 10 years. The college’s third student fee, registration, will remain unchanged.
“Macomb Community College is a critical bridge to the skills and credentials necessary for good jobs with wages that sustain families and build economic prosperity,” said Macomb Community College President James O. Sawyer IV, Ed.D. “With rising inflation, many are having to make hard choices to manage their finances. Macomb is committed to do everything we can to ensure our residents can continue to afford the education and training they need to position themselves and their families for great futures.”
Macomb assesses only three student fees, far fewer than most other higher educational institutions. The student service fee will increase to $15 per student per semester from $10, and the IT/facility feewill increase to $7.50 per billable contact hour from $5. This will result in an increase of approximately $27.50 per semester for most students. The college’s registration fee will stay $50.
Even with the increase, Macomb’s fees of $177.50 per semester for full-time students continue to be considerably below the state average of $407 for Michigan’s 28 community colleges. The college’s student service fee and IT/facility fee have remained the same for more than a decade. However, the needs of the areas they help fund have significantly grown and require more ongoing investment and resources, including academic and student support services, and campus and IT security.
Macomb has the fourth-lowest tuition rate among the state’s 28 community colleges, 17% below the average, and a tuition rate that is 78% lower than the state’s public universities.
The college has a longstanding commitment to making the most of limited fiscal resources. Macomb’s millage rate is the third lowest among the state’s community colleges, and the college receives the ninth-lowest appropriation per student (fiscal year equated student – FYES) from the state. Even so, Macomb has maintained the lowest or second-lowest operating expense among the state’s 28 community colleges for the past 15 years.
