Macomb Community College’s Skilled Trades hosts MAP+ information session

Students can earn 11 college credits and be apprenticeship ready through no-cost program

Macomb Community College will hold an information session Monday, Oct. 28, 6 p.m. for the winter semester of the Michigan Apprenticeship Program Plus (MAP+), a pre-apprenticeship initiative designed to give students the basic skills needed to enter a construction or manufacturing apprenticeship or a work-based learning career.

MAP+ is an opportunity for students to earn 11 tuition-free college credits towards an industrial readiness certificate. Students can complete the courses in one semester and develop workplace and academic skills. The industrial readiness certificate and successful completion of the program shows prospective employers that the student has the aptitude necessary to enter their trade of choice. At the end of the semester, MAP+ hosts a hiring event with local employers that have open skilled trades positions and potential apprenticeship opportunities.

Apprenticeships are sponsored by a company, which matches the student with a highly skilled on-the-job mentor. The apprentice earns a wage while learning the trade. The educational component is provided by Macomb. Many apprenticeships are registered with and certified by the U.S. Department of Labor.

There is no registration fee for MAP+ and students can participate in the program at no cost. The information session will be held Monday, Oct. 28, 6 p.m. on Macomb’s South Campus, Building T-191. The session will be repeated virtually on Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. For more details on the information session and to register, contact Carol Hensler-Smith at hensler-smithc516@macomb.edu or 586-445-7169.
