Accreditation assessors seeking public comment regarding Macomb Community College Police Department

Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission conducting on-site visit July 29-30

A team of assessors from the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission will be conducting a two-day, on-site visit at Macomb Community College July 29-30, one of the final steps in the two-year process for Macomb College Police to become an accredited department. The voluntary accreditation process ensures that law enforcement agencies engage in ongoing professional development and continuous improvement, and their methods, policies, procedures and daily operations follow best practices.

Members of the public, including college employees and students, are encouraged to provide feedback on the ability of Macomb Community College Police to comply with the commission’s standards, which are available here.  Community members may call 586.445.7270 on July 30th, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., to provide comments to the on-site accreditors. Each phone call is limited to five minutes.

Community members may also email feedback through July 30 to ewiles@michiganpolicechiefs.org or write to Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission, 3474 Alaiedon Parkway, Suite 600, Okemos, MI 48864.

“We view accreditation as a vital and valuable process,” William Leavens, chief, Macomb College Police. “It is not only about employing standardized best practices and engaging in ongoing training - it is about embracing our accountability to all those we serve and proving that we are reliable, trustworthy and transparent.”

The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar Michigan law enforcement agencies. The team will examine all aspects of the Macomb Community College Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services, reporting their findings to the full commission who will make the determination whether an agency is granted accredited status. Accreditation is valid for a three-year period, during which time annual reports must be filed attesting to continued compliance with the commission’s standards.

The Macomb Community College Police Department is a professional, full-service law enforcement agency with responsibility for all areas of the college community, including two campuses (East and Center) in Clinton Township and one campus (South) and a technical education center in Warren, encompassing more than 400 acres and 40 buildings. The department includes certified police officers, public service officers who provide security, fire protection and dispatch support, communications/ dispatch operators and administrative assistants.
