Registration now open for Macomb Community College’s summer MORE session, which begins July 19

The Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment (MORE), a lifelong learning initiative from Macomb Community College, will offer a summer session July 19 through Aug. 5, with five classes and five local excursions.

“MORE’s summer combination of classes and excursions gives our members the opportunity to really get out and enjoy our beautiful summer surroundings,” said William Wood, director, Cultural Affairs and Community Engagement, Macomb Community College.

Each course is taught by subject matter experts and lasts approximately two hours, with up to 30 minutes reserved for a question-and-answer period. MORE members can choose from three class/excursion packages: three classes or excursions for $33, five classes or excursions for $50 and seven classes or excursions for $63.

Highlights of MORE’s summer session include:

  • Summer Discovery Boat Tour at Lake St. Clair Metropark: MORE kicks off the summer semester with a boat trip on Lake St. Clair. The morning session, Great Lakes Science, will focus on the water and wildlife that call the lake home. The afternoon session, History of the Great Lakes, offers a glimpse into how the people, ships and lighthouses that came before us helped past travelers navigate the lake.
  • The 19th Century Origins of Football: From Folk Football to Soccer, Rugby and American Football: This class gives an overview of the how this sport has evolved over the years and the forces at work changing the game from a primitive British folk football game into the origins of modern soccer, rugby and American football.
  • Monarch Butterflies: This presentation explores the transformation of a tiny caterpillar to the most recognized of all American butterflies, the Monarch and its 3,000-mile migration.
  • Wolcott Mill Metropark Farm Center Picnic: MORE’s summer semester wraps up with a picnic at the Wolcott Mill Metropark Farm Center pavilion. The day includes an early morning milking of the cows at the farm center, daytime astronomy with a sun telescope at Rotary Park observatory and a casual exploration of the abundant trails surrounding the historic grist mill that gives the park its name.

There may be additional charges to participate in the excursions.

All courses are held at the Macomb University Center on Macomb Community College’s Center Campus at 44575 Garfield Road in Clinton Township. To view the catalog and to register, go to www.LorenzoCulturalCenter.com/MORE. For additional information, email MORE@macomb.edu.
