The reasons a student may pursue an associate degree in cybersecurity at Macomb vary from job security to the desire to protect people and organizations from data breaches and other incidents. But for Macomb student Hannah Le, the decision to major in cybersecurity is even more impactful.

“As someone who experienced homelessness and housing insecurity in the past, getting into information technology and cybersecurity felt like the best way to survive,” she said.

After graduating from Sterling Heights High School several years ago, Hannah, 32, struggled to find her place in life. She was never a strong student in high school and didn’t think much about higher education at first. That changed one day.

“I wanted to change my life for the better,” she said. “It was kind of scared at first to decide on whether or not I should invest in something like a college degree when I’m broke. Macomb seemed like the most affordable and accessible way to give myself that chance.”

Discovering her full potential at Macomb

Prior to deciding on a career in cybersecurity, Hannah said she had no interest in technology, science or math and admits she struggled with those classes in high school.  At Macomb, she discovered her full potential to succeed in what she said were her tough classes.

“Of all of the weaknesses I was always so sure that I had, I’m learning at Macomb I’m a lot stronger than I thought,” she said.

Cybersecurity club, internship and Macomb resources help students excel

Outside of the classroom, Hannah is part of the cybersecurity club at Macomb, where she learns from ethical hacking demonstrations, cybersecurity conventions and by spending time with her peers. Hannah said she has further benefited from her cybersecurity internship at Macomb, where she earns money while she learns.

“I actually had a bunch of offers for IT and cybersecurity internships, but the best fit for me was going to be an internship that would give me the best learning experience,” she said. “This internship has exceeded my expectations and I’ve gained way more than I thought possible.”

A good-paying job in cybersecurity is possible with a two-year degree

When Hannah completes her associate degree, she plans to find a job in information technology immediately, she said. However, she hasn’t ruled out pursing a bachelor’s degree in the future. She is considering Macomb’s transfer partnerships with one of the four-year colleges.

“I love that the credits we earn here go straight to the next degree at other schools for like one-tenth of the tuition and half the time,” she said.

When Hannah isn’t busy studying, participating in the cybersecurity club activities or working for Macomb, she’s busy with her all-white husky named Suki. She also enjoys reading, writing, video games and one other thing, “Thanks to Macomb, I’ve discovered that I actually love learning,” she said.
