Should you change your college major?

For some Macomb students, like Daysha Ross, changing majors makes sense. She originally started her education journey in hopes of becoming a certified personal fitness trainer. However, after she started the program, she realized that it wasn’t quite what she was looking for and changed her major.

Should you change your major?

Chances are good that if you’re in college, you’ve either changed majors or you know someone who has.  Around one out of every three college students change their major sometime during their educational journey, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. If you’ve started down a path and not sure if you’re on the right track, you may wonder if you should change your major.

Daysha changed her major into a field that she was equally passionate about, video production. The 20-year-old boasted about how the program allows her to be creative and how much success she’s able to find in her new major. By majoring in Macomb’s Media & Communications Arts – Video Production associate degree program Daysha is learning about:

  • Film production;
  • Taped studio programming;
  • Live Feeds;
  • Camera operations;
  • Lighting;
  • Audio/video electronic components;
  • Software functionality;
  • Troubleshooting and much more.

Freedom to explore

Beyond video production and exercise, Daysha has a wide variety of interests, which also includes producing music and reading. Macomb offers students like Daysha the chance to explore their interests and expand upon what they’re most passionate about.

“It’s just awesome. Getting that diverse range of experiences.” Daysha said.

And although she didn’t end up pursing a degree as a certified personal fitness trainer, she has no regrets.
