Macomb Community College MORE catalog available for fall session beginning Oct. 4

Fall session marks 10 years of providing dedicated educational opportunities for Macomb County seniors

Registration for the fall session of the Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment (MORE), a lifelong learning initiative of Macomb Community College, is now open.  The session begins on Oct. 4 and will offer 52 classes and three excursions, with topics ranging from local history to science and nature to health and wellness. This fall marks the college’s 10th anniversary of offering dedicated programming for the community’s seniors.

Nearly half of the classes are new, with another approximately 35% of those previously offered updated with new content.  A selection of classes is also available by Zoom for those unable to attend in person.

“For a decade, Macomb Community College has offered a dedicated program for our community’s seniors to explore and expand their interests, to engage in thoughtful dialogue and to just have fun,” said William Wood, director, Cultural Affairs and Community Engagement.

The courses each last about two hours with time reserved for a question-and-answer period and are taught by subject matter experts. Highlights of the fall session include:

  • Medicare Made Simple: Adam Simon, with more than 14 years of experience in the insurance industry, will lead a presentation on the original Medicare as well as how that can be paired with either a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • Red Flags of Fraud and Online Shopping Safety: Monica Beach, education foundation manager for the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, will highlight some fraud schemes that are currently being seen locally, identify how to spot red flags to avoid becoming a victim and outline actions to help support secure online shopping experiences. This course is also available via Zoom.
  • Rough Seas: The Edmund Fitzgerald: Presenter Charlie Shelton, community outreach interpreter with Huron-Clinton Metroparks, specializes in Michigan’s history and will present the story of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and delve into the causes of the sinking of the ship. This presentation is also available via Zoom.

Excursions scheduled for MORE’s fall session include a tour of Pewabic Pottery with a workshop on how to glaze tiles in the same way as the Pewabic fabrication team, a tour of the Detroit Institute of Arts and a tour the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, which is a National Historic Landmark.

MORE offers four packages. First-time attendees can sample the program through a package of three classes for $30. A seven-class package is $56, with 10 classes for $75.  A special flexible package is also available for $120 for 14 classes. Those who choose this package can choose additional classes beyond the 14 included in the package for no additional charge five days before the class is held and as long as the class has openings. Excursions may require additional charges.

MORE classes will be held at the Macomb University Center on the college’s Center Campus in Clinton Township, 44575 Garfield Road in Clinton Township. (Campus Map)
